Ruth

Was Ruth an existentialist? I just thought of this idea, and I think it's really interesting to focus on her character for a change rather than Kathy.  She's interesting in that she lives a selfish life, but regrets none of it.  She really just lives life down to her own ideals toward what is okay.  What are your reactions?

  1. I could definitely see Ruth as an existentialist. Although she never gives and concrete evidence saying she is in fact one, but throughout the entirety of the novel, she uses her smarts, wits and cunning to get her way, not caring of who she hurts in the process.
Living in a society that is built upon the advances of science and its effects on human life, she never mentions any belief in god, but she has accepted that she holds a specific purpose for being on the earth and in content with carrying out that meaning.

    1. I agree, i thimk she is an existentialist too. She doesn't think her actions are wrong or would hurt other people and doesn't questions her morals on the desicions she makes either. But would this mean that most of the existentialists are selfish people?
